The last Italian style theatre in Switzerland Three medieval castles – a UNESCO world heritage – tower above the city of Bellinzona on the southern edge of the Alps. But in the city centre, a typical Italian-style theatre can be found, with boxes all around the auditorium.
Citizens formed a stock company and commissioned an architect from Milan, who sought inspiration from La Scala opera house. With its fresh green colours, white and golden stucco masks and decorations, the theatre is as beautiful as it was at its opening in 1847; even the partitions between the boxes are still in place in both circles. The theatre season runs from October to April.
